Special Engineering Document Intent

Purpose:

To inform, explain, and call out project requirements TO PRODUCTION that are outside the scope of “normal” procedures and policies or constructions. While other departments may look at the SE document, it’s not meant as a place for instructions to drafting or sales or service.

 

Definitions:

Normal- This is almost purely subjective and changes based on unit type and category. What’s normal for supermarket is different that what’s normal for custom. Same with indoor air handler versus outdoor roof top unit.

 

Manager’s Intent:

The PE should employ critical thinking in the creation of this document. Balancing the need for expediency with the need to clarify project requirements. Avoid direct duplication of FO options and SE’s but expand and clarify any options or SE’s that could be confusing or misinterpreted on the floor. Call out items that are unique to the project or are critical to customer satisfaction. Items that could be expensive repairs if not installed (or not installed correctly) in production.

 

Create a document that improves the chance that Seasons 4 will produce a quality product.

 

Examples:

Control panel muffin fans- There is a production procedure that covers the installation of muffin fans when there is a single control panel but nothing that directs production when more than one CP is in the unit. If you have two panels, call out where the muffin fans are installed. Production should ask but this will increase the odds that someone gets it right (or discovers it if it’s wrong).

Flat base frame- This unit has a FLAT base frame. 95% of the formed bases S4 builds have the integral flashing. This may be the only place that it would be visible outside of engineering and drafting.

Change to a common design- The previous four units had viewports. This unit does NOT have viewports.

 

Theory:

In theory, everyone should do their job to 100% perfection. Each department should read the FO, SE, weight sheet, and any other info that’s available for the project and they should make their checklists and hold themselves accountable.

 

Reality:

Everyone has bad days, tired days, missed days, …

If there’s something that you’re on the fence about adding to the SE because it’s “someone else’s job” to see the info or check the info, take a break then go ahead and add it.
